Hello everyone, I’m Martin, the best man and Mike’s best friend since university. I’m honoured to be here today to celebrate his marriage to the lovely Zara. I’m sure you all agree that they make a wonderful couple and we wish them all the best for their future together.

Now, I’ve known Mike for a long time, and I have to say, he’s one of a kind. The first time we met, he introduced himself as the most intelligent man I would ever meet. I thought he was an idiot. Turns out, he was right. He’s the most intelligent idiot I’ve ever met. He’s also the most generous, loyal, and fun-loving idiot I’ve ever met. And I mean that in the best possible way.

We’ve had some great times together at university. We spent most of our time drinking in the cheapest student pubs we could find, trying to impress the ladies with our wit and charm. Unfortunately, we were not very successful. We usually ended up going home by ourselves, or worse, with each other. Not in that way, of course. Just as mates. Sharing a pizza and playing Championship Manager on the computer. We used to lose days playing that game. Literally. We once missed a whole week of lectures because we were too busy managing our virtual teams. We were so addicted to that game, we even named our pet hamsters after our favourite players. Mike had Beckham and I had Ronaldo. They were the best hamsters ever. Until they escaped and got eaten by a cat. That was a sad day.

But enough about our past. Let’s talk about the present. Mike has finally found the love of his life in Zara. And I couldn’t be happier for him. Zara is smart, beautiful, kind, and funny. She’s everything Mike ever dreamed of. And more. She’s also very patient and understanding. She has to be, to put up with Mike’s antics. Like the time he accidentally set fire to the kitchen while trying to cook her a romantic dinner. Or the time he forgot her birthday and bought her a pack of socks as a last-minute gift. Or the time he proposed to her in the middle of a traffic jam, with a ring he borrowed from a stranger. Zara, you are a saint. And Mike, you are a lucky man.

I’m so glad that Mike met Zara. He’s changed for the better since he met her. He’s more mature, more responsible, more confident. He’s even stopped playing Championship Manager. Well, almost. He still plays it sometimes, when Zara is not around. But don’t worry, Zara. He loves you more than his virtual team. I think.

I’m also looking forward to finding my own partner someday, so I can double date with Mike and Zara. I’m sure they’ll be great wingmen for me. Or maybe not. Maybe they’ll just make fun of me and scare away any potential dates. But that’s OK. I love them anyway. They’re my friends. And I’ll miss seeing Mike as much as I used to. But I’m also happy that he’s settled down with the woman of his dreams. And I hope they have a long and happy marriage.

So, please join me in raising a toast to the bride and groom. To Mike and Zara! Cheers! 🥂
